Happy Boy’s Day! Since today is Boy’s Day I thought it would be appropriate to have a few fish (aka carp) for Sean’s lunch today. To make the fish, all I did was make a sandwich using an oat bran hamburger bun and cut it in half. The fish are decorated with mozzarella and American cheese, olives for the eyes, and carrots for the tails. I also filled up the box with strawberries and a homegrown cherry tomato.

Rwaaaarrrr!!! Here’s another sandwich that I made using a hamburger bun. The lion’s mane is made from carrots, and it’s face is made from cheese, olives, and carrots for his cheeks.
Finally, I have had a few people ask me what kind of cutters do I use to cut sandwich bread, like in my previous Bear Sandwich post. I use metal cutters because I find that they cut cleanly and with little effort. I love to buy the cutters in sets like this, because it can cut your bread to fit any sized bento box. The only negative thing is that you need to wash and dry them well so that they don’t rust.

Hi, Susan..your fish and bear are very cute. You always do a good job on sandwich. Btw, I’m still waiting for the prizes from Mutual Publishing Bento Box Contest, i hope it won’t missing on the way here. Pray hard for it!
This is so simple, it’s genius! Keira was with me when we saw this and loves your carp fish.. she also shouted out, “hey! we have dat!!” when she saw a photo of your cookbook. lol. I love your cutters, I’ve never seen this set before.
Have a super Mother’s Day weekend Susan!

Hi! I just found your website and I love it. It’s giving me great ideas for how to pack smart, healthy, delicious, and cute lunches! I don’t have kids (yet), but I am planning to start packing bento lunches for my boyfriend and myself. I will be checking out your website often for ideas. I love the cute lunches you make!
I love the fish and the lion! For the lion’s mane, how did you cut the carrots into thin strings?
Hi Leslee! I used a Japanese spiral vegetable slicer, kind of like this one http://www.amazon.com/World-Cuisine-48297-99-Tri-Blade-Vegetable/dp/B0007Y9WHQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1311563737&sr=8-2
with a very thin blade.
Quick tip for the metal cutters…I wash mine, give them a quick swipe with a towel, then pop them in the toast oven for a short toast cycle. Dries them right up, and no rust. Adapted this trick from one of my Mother’s…she puts the cast iron skillet in the hot oven to dry it well after washing/hand drying.
Great suggestions!
