Okay folks, here is my how to make an easy bunny maki sushi post! For my bunny maki I used hotdogs and SPAM cooked in teriyaki sauce with sushi rice and nori.
Sushi Rice for Kids
- 2 cups rice (makes 4 cups cooked)
- 2 tablespoons Japanese rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wash the rice and cook in a rice cooker. Combine the vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl and mix well until the sugar and salt have dissolved. When rice is done let steam for another 15 minutes. Next, fold the vinegar mixture into the rice and let cool some so that the rice is easier to handle.
On a sushi mat, place a small amount of rice as shown above.
Place strips of SPAM along each side of the rice and then press the strips on to the rice at an angle.
Add on more rice evenly to each side, leaving about a third of the nori sheet uncovered. Then place the hotdogs on top of the rice between the two strips of SPAM.
Using your fingers hold the hotdogs in place and then roll the top part of the mat over

Keep rolling over all the way until you form your maki sushi. While still in the mat, form the sushi into a cylinder shape by evenly pressing all sides.
To cut the sushi, wet your knife and then cut the roll into half.
Clean your knife and lightly dampen the blade with water before each cut. Bring the two rolls together and then cut again in half.
Cut each side again in half to make eight slices.
Tada!!! Wasn’t that easy peasy? You now have bunny sushi! In my sushi bento I only decorated the first two bunnies with eyes and noses, since you can’t see the rest anyway.

Great tutorial! It does look easy when you show it with action shots like this. And all 8 pieces look good! Even the ends
Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks sheri! I told you it was easy!

Now.. I little newbie question.. can I ask how do you take such nice pictures of action shots? With a tripod (and timer?)
I´ve been having so much trouble on taking pictures here.. since I don´t have anyone to “help” and I don´t want to mess my camera ^_^ (eh)
Thanks karaimame!
Yes, I use a tripod and a 2 second timer. LOL, my hands are blurry in one of the pics too.

Hi Susan,
I’m trying to brainstorm some easy to make potluck dishes. I have to feed 36 people after a baseball game with 3 other families for an after baseball game potluck. Do you have any recommendations? Something I could prepare ahead of time? The food will be sitting in the car for about 3 hours before it’s served. I have those bags that can keep it semi warm but not hot. What do you think?
Hi Mrs. P! Wow, 36 people!!! Rice, chili, and hotdogs come to mind… it’s always a crowd pleaser here and holds well too. If you like, email me because I think that I can help you better with a little more information. syuen14@gmail.com
Thanks a lot Susan for the tutorials. It’s very helpful
. I think we can make another character by this way
thanks tatabonita!
