Char Hung Susan #67

For those of you who live on Oahu, you’ll know that one of the best places to buy manapua (char siu bao) is from Char Hung Sut located in China town.  Now I’m not claiming to make manapua even half as good as Char Hung Sut does, but I wanted to mention them because, hands down, they are my favorite place!   In addition to the manapua, some of my favorites are the half moon, pork hash, mai tai su, and the chow fun. Yummy!!!

I made these mini baked and steamed manapuas as practice for the second bento class that I am teaching this weekend.  I have the recipe for baked version in my new cookbook but I have never steamed them before and was curious as to how they would turn out.  I thought the steamed version turned out well and Paige really loved them.  The manapuas are about 2 inches across and I packed them in these little white boxes- which I thought resembled the boxes that manapua is typically packed in.  To make the piggies, I used a clean rubber stamp with a little bit of red food coloring.

It would probably make a good party favor! :D

  1. Oh how cute! I really miss manapuas! I wish I lived back on Oahu again so I could take your cooking class. When I left the island I really craved manapuas and haven’t really been able to find a recipe that comes close!

  2. adorable!! beautifully packaged, and great idea with the stamp – how fun!

You have so many great ideas. The manapuas would definitely make a great favor too. I can’t wait until your new book becomes available so I can try the recipe.

When and where do you hold your bento classes?

    • Thanks Cindy! I have only had a few classes and these last 2 are just with my church. I using them to help me improve my teaching skills. :D I am hoping to teach some classes sometime after June that would be open to the public. I really need to sit down and plan the logistics for it. Thanks so much for your interest! :)

  4. Wow! I want to make these too! My kids love the baked bao, and I would love to surprise them.
Totally agree about Char Hung Sut! My dad always took us there, you have to go right when they open, and for the longest time I never knew there were any other places you could go for manapua, hehe!

    • Thanks sheri! :D I know right?! Char Hung Sut is the best! Now I have to go and make a run because I’m craving their chowfun!

I can’t wait to see your baos! I love how you put your bentos together- so pretty!

  5. I love the name….Char Hung Susan! And the piggie stamp is so cute!

  6. Char Hung Sut! I miss that place. You own manapuas look delicious. These will be a cute addition to a bento box. I’ll be looking for this recipe in your new book!

  7. Love char siu bao! Great idea to use pig stamp on the top so people now what is inside for the filling. Usually we just have red dot for it, green dot for green bean filling … always with the dot :) Have fun with the bento class this weekend!

You’re just killing me, Susan! I can barely bake brownies properly and now I’m dying to try my hand at making some char sui bao!!! You make it look so simple and tasty! Is there no end to your creativity!?!? :)
