Yesterday I went to Marukai at Ward and found this package of furikake that will color your rice when mixed with it. You can see on the package that it contains 5 different colors to play with- pink, green, yellow, red, and purple! I used the pink packet for my flowers which I mixed with a little less than half a cup of rice to get the desired pretty pink color. To keep with the Valentine’s theme, I made the flowers looking at each other lovingly under the smiling sun.
The bento also contains fried chicken and a pink ume soba decorated with the same heart picks that I used yesterday. The flavor of the ume is very distinct, so if your child is not an ume fan then you should go for something else like pink somen. The different flavored/colored somen that I have tried in the past have been much, much blander.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

thank you for the pix of the rice coloring pkg — because i would not have found it otherwise — so timely too since i will be going by ward ave today
thank you again!!
Thanks soyzick!
Look by the rice seasoning mixes, it near the top of the shelf.
thats too pretty…the pink is insanely adorable!
Thanks notabrownbag!
so many pretty, warm colors in this one… and of course the box itself is beautiful, and the flower friends are so sweet! ume noodles sound great!
Thanks gamene!
Love the pink! This bento is really perfect for Valentine’s … lunch for two? or lunch for four? hehehe … Those colorful furikake are great! I just have sakura denbu and only 1 pack left
Thanks Lia!
I know right!? The box looks really big in the picture but it’s actually a small little thing and the containers are shallow. I never tried the sakura denbu, I’ll have to look see if Marukai carries that.
you know you must have quite a following — more than i could have thought because i was at marukai today around lunchtime after i commented ~~and~~
i tried my best to explain it to the person and after she pointed out the empty shelf she said
“oh ya someone with a camera phone came in, showed the pix and emptied the shelf.”
i guess i will have to hike on out to OCCC to the other marukai
btw on another note have you tried the AHI TERIYAKI PATTY @ marukai ??
i swear it is like eatting a pork hash from SING CHEONG YUAN BAKERY in chinatown (that bakery makes them the size of a babys fist!!)no fish taste at all !!
i would love to know how they make it — if you have any clue could you share it with me Please ???
Oh no! I can’t believe they ran out!
I hope they restock that soon, because it’s such a great product! Oooh, that ahi teriyaki patty sounds good… I’ve never had it before! I’m not sure how they make it, but I really want to go and try it out now!
Soo cute your pink themed bento! Love the pink rice and soba ~ it came out so bright
Thanks sheri!
The soba came out really pink almost lavender in color. Thanks for the tip on the sakura denbu!
P.S. Marukai has sakura denbu, in refrigerated section.
Now that’s a pink bento! Wow, vibrant yet still yummy looking.
I love how you have the flowers looking at each other and smiling/laughing as if they just shared a joke. So cute.
Thanks hapabento!
Can I enter this in the RED contest?
We would be disapointed if you didn’t.
