Valentine’s Rooster and Chicken Bento #32

Back to bento making!  I had a short bento holiday because Paige had no school this week until today.  On Paige’s short break we had a lot of fun going to different places and yesterday we spent the day at the Honolulu Zoo.  They had a lot of new exhibits there and I posted a few pictures of our favorite animals.  The kids especially loved the petting zoo and we spent a lot of time there playing with the goats.  There also was an uber friendly peacock at the snack shop who kept coming around and begging for food.  The peacock, who was taller than Sean, kept coming after him for his french fries.  Needless to say, Sean was terrified and now hates peacocks.

Anyway on to today’s Valentine’s Day bento.  I made two love birds (well, actually chickens) and used red heart picks for their combs that I found at Ben Franklin at the Market City location.  I also used my very red bento box so that I could enter this into Hapabento’s “Red” themed bento contest. :D  I also found this great Chinese Chicken vegetable cutter.  I have a whole set of all of these vintage looking Chinese cutters that my mother in-law gave to me.  I’ll have to post a picture of them so you can help me figure out what some of the cutters are.

    • Thanks soyzick! :D I updated the post with a picture of the picks. It is the Kaimuki Ben Franklin and they have the picks near the front with all of the Valentines day stuff. Hope this helps. :D

      • The cutters are really old, my mother in-law has had them for many years. I’ve seen some sold at Compleat Kitchen and Executive Chef but the cutters are a little different.

  3. The cutters are amazing….the details, the details!! Are the lovebirds stuffed with anything?

  4. What cute love chickens! That veggie cutter is amazing! Such little detail!

Looks like the zoo was fun! I like the peeking through the fish area that must be fun!

  5. Fantastic Susan! I have every color heart pick except red, it seems >:( Those are great!
I have seen those cutters! I think they are a set of the Chinese Zodiac. Right?

  7. Looks like you had a wonderfu time. Love those little chicken/rooster pair. I’m hoping to get an entry made for Hapa’s contest this month…but I think I’ll have to do a little shopping first. I love the zoo, what a great trip. Can’t wait to see the whole set of cutters – the rooster is amazing.

  9. This is great Red BOMB entry! Love the cute chicks and your cutter is awesome, very details. This entire picture is excellent with the sweet props. I see you had a great time with the kids in the zoo. Did they keep asking what is the animal, what do they eat, and ….. a lot more?

    • Thanks Lia! :D Sean just wanted to run up to every animal and touch them. He was only afraid of the french fry stealing peacock! Paige loves animals and wants to be a vet so she wanted to see every single animal and read all of the signs.

  10. I love that you took photos of the tigers. Yay for Year of the Tiger!

Looks like you had a blast at the zoo. What a pesky french-fry stealing peacock! Poor Sean!

  11. What fun zoo pics! Too bad about the peacock that would make a fun bento maybe using pea pods as the tails feathers.
